There are Preschools and there are babysitting services--it all depends on what you are looking for for your child.

The teachers schedule a routine that they follow EVERYDAY for the children. This provides structure.

A quality Preschool has Professional E.C.E's ONLY--this means that those who are teaching the children have went to college to learn how to 'teach and deal with preschool aged children and teach various skills and curriculums.

Professional E.C.E's would have their first aid & CPR in case a situation developed with any child.

A good Preschool would follow somesort of educational or preschool learning program, the most popular being "Play To Learn'.

Professional Development accessible to E.C.E's to keep up with children's needs.

A Good Preschool center would obviously be clean and sanitary and provide healthy nutrious meals (not a regular feeding of hotdogs and kraft dinner etc..)

They would also have healthy activities and 2 hours a day of outdoor activities.

In Canada, E.C.E's now have to be Registered through the College Of E.C.E's in order to have a professional title.

On average, pricing is about $30 per child per day. Infants of course cost more due to responsibilities and materials required for care.

Babysitters are babysitters...put the kids in front of the tv, throw on a movie, cartoon or kid's show.

Summer is here - finally! Although it is a bit cooler than normal for around this time of year, it is still nice to see the sunny days and clear skies.

Summer is a great time for you to get outside with your kids and try out some unique activities for preschoolers. Physical activity is something that children need more of these days. With the growing popularity of video games over the last couple decades, as well as television etc. we see alot of children and preschoolers being baby sat by the tv sets.

Don't get me wrong, television can be fun and even educational, but everything has to be in balance.

Childhood Obesity:

Yes, there are more cases of childhood obesity happening today than ever before. Too many boxed and processed breakfasts, lunches and suppers for children. No thought or little thought goes into providing nutritious, healthy snacks for kids, healthy preschool lunches and suppers for kids.

Treats always seem to be candy for children. What about providing wholesome delicious snacks that are good for children and adults!

Outdoor Activities For Preschool Kids & Children:

Kids can play in splash pools at the local park, supervised of course. There are many outside games and activities like hide and go seek, tag or what about simply kicking a ball around, helping you clean up the yard or helping you to pick up litter around the house.

Being outside gives you opportunities to teach kids about nature, talk about the different animals and wildlife and why we have to respect them and take care of them and respect living things. Also, we can develop respect for the environment and the earth by teaching kids about pollution and littering and why these are bad.

You could do something as simple as let your kids sketch with some crayons, drawing the trees they see, the sunny sky or different birds or animals they may see.

On a summer day you can give your kids some bigger paint brushes and a bucket of water and let them paint using the water on a flat concrete or brick wall. The water of course evaporates and no harm is done. Kids Love it!

Along a section of a chain link fence, between a couple of trees or on an old wall you could tie an old 'white sheet'.

Give the kids some paint brushes and some non toxic children's paint and let them paint anything they want and a variety of colors etc. The 'white sheet' acts like a big white canvas!

Spelling for kids. It isn’t always easy to teach your kids to spell, or help your children to learn the alphabet.

As parents or educators what can be done to help teach your kids with their spelling?

Are there any spelling activities or spelling games that be done to familiarize kids with spelling of common, everyday words?

Can you accelerate your child’s learning curve and actually help children learn to spell faster?

The answer is YES! Obviously you need to familiarize your child, children or preschoolers with the letters of the alphabet first.

Children need to recognize what the letter looks like, how it is printed and how you say it’s name.

Doing exercises and quizzing your children on letters will work wonders with regards to them learning letters.

One thing you can do as parents or teachers is as follows.

Write out each letter of the alphabet. You could write ‘1’ large letter of the alphabet on a piece of paper or Bristol board (it’s a bit more durable.)

The letters could be made big and bold using a thick, black permanent marker or paint.

You would want to use rhymes to teach your children the order of the letters of the alphabet while you show each letter in its proper order.

You could use these to ‘quiz’ your children or preschoolers.

It would probably be best to quiz the children by showing them the chosen letter (starting at A) and continuing through the alphabet, again all in order until they have a solid understanding of the order of the letters of the alphabet.

You could ‘quiz’ them further and give them examples of words that start with the ‘letter you are showing’.

For example, “A is for apple, ape, ant”. You could name a few then have them try to list a few names that they may think start with the letter you are showing.

Practice makes perfect. Remember, this isn’t going to happen right away!

You have to help to really make them understand the letters, the order in which they come in the alphabet and how you say them.

After that time giving examples of simple words that start with the chosen letter really help them to advance that much more.

You could also use words found in the newspaper or words in magazines to quiz your child.

You could cut out big, bolded words and have an assortment of short words to start (Ex.) cat, dog, hat, boat etc.

Have them move from ‘left’ to ‘right’ and go one letter at a time to say each ‘letter’ as it appears.

This really helps to make it fun and challenging for kids. It is nice to really ‘praise’ them up when they identify each ‘letter’ as it appears moving from the left side to the right side.

After you have done this for a while you can start working on helping them to sound words out etc.

You don’t want to move too quickly, but you want to really help your children to develop the basics first, then, expand on those spelling and letter identification skills.

*It is good to also have your child practice printing letters, lower and upper case.

Preschool Math & Math Activities For Kids

Preschool Math can be very fun and easy to teach to kids. It can be as easy as singing a number song or counting fun objects.

I have a couple of number songs in my videos on You Tube.

A preschool math activity I would recommend is counting some familiar objects that the children are familiar with. Count up to an age appropriate number depending on the level of your class.
Counting is a great form of math as it get the children familiar with the orders of numbers.

You can also read a book about counting or hold up some flash cards that have numbers on them so the children can see associate the look of the number with the number they are saying.

And always a class favorite is counting with food. This one I do with very low numbers just to try and introduce very simple addition and subtraction. I get 3-4 apples and line them up in a row. (I do this activity at a table.) Then I count them. Then I take one apple away and say, "if I take this apple away lets see how many are left." Then we count them again. Then I add it back and follow the same routine.

Then once more I do the same routine but this time taking away two, and then bringing them back. You can go higher depending on the level of your class.

Remember repetition is important but children also get bored easy. So I change it up a bit and say, now what if we eat one apple, so I cut it up give everyone a piece and we count the apples. I go down the list and we eat each apple until there are (zero) 0 apples on the table.

In Preschool, we need to make learning fun so that way when they get to school and start using paper and pencils, they have a positive and fun start to pre k math which encourages them to keep it up throughout school.

Stock an area of your home with different types of paper, paint, markers and other art supplies. Stock another area with blocks, cars, trucks, trains and miniature people. Fill a box with various clothing items, pots and pans, toy food and other materials for pretend play. Then set up a quiet area with math manipulatives, puzzles and books. You now have a preschool in your home!

When you begin formal lessons, keep them short and simple. End the lessons before your child is ready to stop.
If you notice your child becoming frustrated, end the activity for the day. One of the best ways to teach your budding student is to read to him or her daily.

Your preschooler has plenty of time to learn the details of reading, writing and arithmetic. Take time during these early years to focus on the basics and make learning fun!

Plastic Bottle Greenhouse - Science Experiment
Science Experiments For Kids

What You Need For This Science Activity:

 Some soil
 Seedlings, seeds or small plant
 Tape
 Scissors
 Clear plastic water bottle or beverage bottle with cap

Procedure for This Science Experiment:

1. Make sure the plastic bottle is rinsed out well. It doesn’t have to be completely dry inside.

2. Carefully cut the plastic bottle in half using the scissors.

3. Being careful of sharp edges - take the bottom portion of the plastic bottle and fill it about half way with soil.

4. Plant either your seeds, or seedling in the soil-making sure it is lightly covered with soil.

5. Carefully place the top portion of the plastic bottle back on top of the lower portion of the bottle. Seal them together with the tape and make sure there are no small holes that air or liquid can escape from.

6. Place just a few drops of water in your bottle greenhouse. Put the cap back on top of the bottle.

7. Place your Bottle Greenhouse near a bright window where it can get lots of sun and warmth.

8. In a few days the bottle will begin to ‘sweat’ inside. This is condensation which will help to keep supplying the seeds or plant with moisture to help it to grow. If it is too wet inside open the cap for a while to let it dry out for a little bit.

9. Check it daily and you will gradually begin to see the plant or seeds growing.

Fun Science Facts For this Kids Science Activity:

Sunlight and it’s warmth, cause the temperature inside the bottle greenhouse to rise.

Because it is sealed with a cap or a lid, the sealed air inside stays heated even though the outside air may cool down.

The air inside the Bottle Greenhouse turns to water which feeds the plant to keep it healthy and alive.

'The Preschool Approach At Home' - Preschool Learning Article

While recently doing some research on the preschool learning and preschool homeschool curriculum, and what type of preschool activities would create a positive self motivation preschool learning environment for the homeschool, I came across some ideas that are so simple it was almost embarrassing that I had to discover this through my ‘research’ time.

When one preschool teacher was asked ‘what is the one preschool teaching tool or tools in your classroom that you could not do without? She answered real life stuff. Pots and pans, staplers, hole punchers, anything around the house that will provide real life experiences for preschool activities.

Think about it…. Every thing you need for your homeschool preschool is just around the corner at a yard sale! If your going to teach preschool homeschool your classroom should be set up like a real life home. Imagine that. A real life home environment for the preschool child, and you did it. Can you teach that way? Of course, you can.

You probably already have, and do allow your child time to play, read, run outdoors, and discover the world on their travels. And you do so in a loving environment.

What you provide will far exceed what is provided for in a public preschool learning environment.

You are the best teacher the child will ever have and your home is the best leaning environment for the preschooler. You certainly don’t need to spend vast amounts of money equipping your home for preschool activities. As mentioned earlier, thrift stores and yard sales can provide more than you could ever use.

Also remember, real life experiences. Let the child help you bake, do laundry, and other household experiences. They all offer visual, hands on, and subtle problem solving. And you thought homeschool preschool would require a classroom setting.

Not hardly.

Fun Summer Activities For Kids:

Sometimes on a wonderful summer day, we just want to stay outside for as long as we can. But what can you do for so long without getting bored?

Here’s an idea for a fun filled day in the sun.

Send notices home with the children saying that they will need to bring a swim suit, towel, and sun screen to stay in their cubbies for the beautiful summer days ahead.

When you have one of those day where you just don’t want to go inside why not set up the playground/yard like this:

1. Set out one kiddy sized pool with floating water toys in it.

2. Set out a sensory bin or large basins with water. Try decorating the water with sparkles or foam shapes and put different sized plastic cups and scoops for the children to explore and practice pouring.

3. Have a “bubble station”. Buy a few packs of bubble solution, *(or make your own). Dump the bubble solution in a large bowl and put a bunch of bubble sticks in it so the children can easily blow bubbles when they go to that station.

4. Fill up some balloons with water and encourage the children to try and toss the balloons back and forth without breaking them, or just have fun and throw them around.

5. Put a sprinkler on for the children to run through.

Enjoy hours of fun in the sun!

Feel free to do all or some of these activities at one time. Just make sure you have adequate supervision around the kiddy pool.

Your playground/backyard will be the talk of the town.

One thing children love is tea parties, hot chocolate parties, or any kind of party where you can make something that you can also enjoy. But in these summer months who wants a hot drink!?

Here is a recipe for a delicious and refreshing punch. You can have a dress up party and then all sit down in your “adult clothes” and sip on some wonderful cold tasty punch.

This recipe is enough for a preschool class or large group of children. If you are a Home Daycare Provider you can always cut this recipe in half. It’s pretty easy without much measuring at all.

Tooty Fruity Punch

2x2L Bottles of Ginger Ale
1L Club Soda
1 Can Lemonade
¼ cup sugar
1 pack of frozen strawberries
1 pack of frozen raspberries
2-4 trays of ice
Orange slices for garnish (optional)
Punch bowl/stirring spoon
Ladle
Plastic champagne style cups

Directions:

Empty the contents of the lemonade can in the bottom of the punch bowl, then pour the sugar on the frozen lemonade.

Next, empty the Ginger Ale and the Club Soda in the punch bowl and stir all ingredients together.

To finish, add as much frozen fruit as you desire, or 1 cup of each. Then set the orange slices on top so they are floating. Then using the ladle fill each plastic champagne cup about half way. Feel free to have seconds, thirds or more.

There you have it, refreshing Tooty Fruity Dress up Party Punch!

Is Your Child Afraid Of The Dark?

Many children, for various reasons are afraid of the dark.
This maybe be for any multitude of reasons. Children in their inexperience, have vivid imaginations and can become fearful of the dark.

So what do you do if this is the case with your child?

Well, there are a few simple steps that can be taken to help to put your children at ease when night time or bed time comes.

1) Walk hand in hand with your child and look through the entire bedroom. Look under beds, in closets, behind objects etc. to show your child that there is nothing to be afraid of like monsters, etc.

2)Leave your bedroom door open as well as your child's bedroom door at night so they do not feel so alone or confined.

3) Close closet doors etc in child's bedroom. This will make them feel more at ease.

4)Place a night light in their bedroom for when they sleep at night so it isn't such a dark experience. the light will make the feel more at ease.

5)In some cases, provide them with a stuffed toy to sleep with at night. This way they will feel secure knowong they are not alone but have a cuddly friend with them.

6) Sometimes, some warm milk before bed will do the trick in making them sleep , quicker, and more soundly.

7) In some cases there maybe times where you play some relaxing, upbeat music (softly) that will keep them occupied until they fall asleep.

8)It is also good to reinforce with your children that you will see them in the morning. This will make them feel reassured that they will see 'Mommy' & 'daddy' in the morning.

* No doubt there are different strategies in order to deal with children over coming their fear of the dark. These are a few really good ideas to assist in helping your children have a good nights sleep with out it affecting you, or your sleep.

Some Ideas For Having Fun With This Preschool Bug Theme Are:

-make sure you have a variety of pictures of bugs you can correctly identify posted around the room

-lots of books in the library with real life pictures of bugs is another great thing to have as well as puzzles

-go to a store like the dollar store or any discount store and look for rubber or plastic bug toys, you can fill the bottom of a sensory bin with sticks or sand and put the toy bugs in it, the children will have a blast

-ask the children what bugs they see around their home or neighborhood, and help them identify them and find pictures of them

-talk about what bugs eat, (i.e. leaves-caterpillars, dirt-worms, other bugs-spiders, human food-ants, etc).

-what do bees do when they land on a flower? where do they take the pollen? what happens to it?

-simple explanations will go further than trying to jam all the details into their minds, for example you could say something like- (when a bee lands on a flower it collects the pollen up and carries to the beehive, when the bee gets to the beehive it puts it in the honeycomb and turns it into honey) you could have a jar of honey with you and have the children taste it.

-talk about how we need bugs around us and we shouldn’t step on bugs when we see them, we should leave them alone and watch what they do, maybe one day we can try and follow it home?

-some teaching resource stores sell little science kits with kid friendly microscopes that have already made up slides with bugs and other things in them for the kids to look at.

-count how many legs certain bugs have, are there lots, or little/few and make a chart with all the names of the bugs down the left and have a line represent each leg, who has the most lines?, that bug has the most legs, which bug has the least lines? That bug has the least amount of legs

-make egg carton caterpillars in the art area

School Lunch Idea: Healthy Pita Pizza’swww.preschoollearningonline.com

This school lunch idea is great for home day care providers or even as a class activity. This school lunch recipe makes about 2 pitas worth (4 pizzas). You can change the toppings for this school lunch idea as desired to the children’s’ liking.

School Lunch Idea: What you will need:

1 pkg. whole wheat pitas
1 jar tomato basil sauce
1 pkg. turkey pepperoni
1 green pepper
1 red pepper
1 small onion
1-2 cups shredded marble cheese
Italian seasoning spice blend (optional)

School Lunch Directions:

Take one pita and cut it carefully with a knife so you split the whole pita in half. You should have two round circles.

Place them on a baking sheet and place in the oven at about 350ºF until a little toasty.

When you pull out the pitas, turn the oven up to 475ºF. Spread some sauce on each one, sprinkle with spice blend and then add toppings as desired. Place back in the oven and cook until cheese is melted and the pizza is cooked to desired liking.

This lunch has everything you need in it, meat, veggies, dairy, and good carbohydrates.

You can serve this lunch with fresh fruit and milk, water, or juice.

Spring Is Here! Get Your Kids Outdoors!

Spring has finally arrived!

Winter and it's often depressing side affects are on their way out! We understand that winter is not depressing for many children but it is for many adults.
Many children love winter. They love tobogganing, skating, snow ball fights, building snowforts, snowmen and playing in the snow.

For many people though, children included, winter is a time to stay indoors and do nothing but play video games, sleep in and watch television.

Ahh, spring is here..what a great feeling of new life. Clean crisp air, warm weather and sunshine really picks up one's spirit and makes us feel energized.

If your children are in a habit of staying inside and playing video games, watching television and sitting around watching the paint dry-we need to incorporate some ideas and fun kids activities to get them out side and more active.

Exercise and outdoor activity is healthy for us all-kids need it just as much if not more than adults to combat childhood obesity issues and depression.

As parent s we need to start planning ahead for activities that get our children involved.
Maybe we can plan day trips to the park. Maybe we can go to the beach and get out of the car and walk around and let children observe nature and the life around them.
Often times Spring time involves cleaning up around the outside of the house.
Raking leaves, tilling gardens, cleaning flower beds, picking up garbage doing small simple repairs.

Can we get our young children involved by doing simple tasks that make them feel special? Maybe they can pass dad his tools when he needs them, maybe they can help mom to clean out the flower beds, pick up pieces of paper etc.
What eveer it is that our kids help us with, make it fun.

Maybe we can play music outside while doing these activities and really praise up our children when they do their part, 'no matter how small', in helping out.

Games can also be fun for kids. When outside with our kids, maybe have them find as many different shaped leaves as possible and collect them?

If your kids are familiar with colors, or counting, maybe have them count the number 'red items' they see when outside or in a certain area.

Per haps as parents we can just get our children to get out and comment on the signs of life (birds, squirrels, rabbits, insects etc..) that they observe around them. Parent can use this opportunity to share their knowledge and fun facts with their kids.

There is really no right or wrong ideas here. The idea is to put the emphasis on getting your children outside and enjoying themselves, keeping them occupied and safely having fun!

*Keep in mind that this time of year brings many children and animals outdoors at all different times of the day. When driving in our cars we want to be cautious of children hiding behind 'parked cars', riding bikes, and running out on to the streets when you least expect it! Always BE ALERT and EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED!

Get Your Kids Off The Couch With These Outdoor Toys

If you have had enough of the kids spending all their time in front of a television or a computer screen, the time has come to get them out of house and into the fresh air and sunshine. One of the best ways to encourage outdoor activity and plenty of exercise is with the aid of fun outdoor toys. Here are some examples of toys that may be just what you need to entice the kids to get up, get out, and have some fun.

There are outdoor toys that will work for just about any age and gender group. For young boys, Air Hogs has a varied line of toys that will do the trick. The RC planes are a lot of fun, and also very inexpensive. Small and made of plastic and Styrofoam components, these RC planes will stand up to a lot of wear and can be had for around $40.00. The RC Aero Ace Jet will also delight the kids and sells for around the same price. For ore fun, there is the RC Air Hogs Super bike that retails for around $20.00.

For younger children, outdoor toys often means water toys. Check out the range of offerings such as Aquaplay, WHAM-O Slip N Slide, and various water guns that are ideal for running around and cooling off at the same time. Many of these water toys can be purchased at discount retail outlets and at online stores for very little cost.

Hand held toys such as pinwheels are a lot of fun. They are inexpensive, come in a wide range of colors, and are ideal for spending sometime outside under the trees. The kids may even get into trading pinwheels with their friends.

How about some wheels to maneuver around the yard or perhaps the neighborhood? If your kids want to get a little mobile, consider a classic Radio Flyer, kettle r, or a Razor Scooter. You can find some great options for wheeled toys at local stores.

Keep in mind that purchasing creative toys is only part of the process for getting the kids out into the open air. Parents need exercise and sunshine too. Make it a point to spend time outside with your kids and you may rediscover some of the delights from your own childhood. Toss around a football, fly a kite, or play games like Tag. Not only will both you and your kids get some exercise, but you also will build some great memories together.

Now For Some Free Spring/Summer Activities:

Cooking Activity: Birds Nests

What you will need:

2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup milk
6 tbsp cocoa
1/2 cup fine shredded coconut (optional)*
3 cups oatmeal

Large Pot
Wooden Spoon
Waxed Paper
Jellybeans
Large Popsicle Sticks

What to do:

Prepare Ingredients using the directions below:

1. Combine the first four ingredients together in a large pot and bring to a boil for about 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.

2. Take pot off of stove and add the coconut and oatmeal. Mix until everything is coated.
Give each child a piece of waxed paper. Drop a generous sized spoonful of the “birds nest” mixture onto the waxed paper.

Have each child work the mixture with a popsicle stick until it’s cool enough to handle.

Have children shape the mixture into a birds nest and then let set.

Once the mixture is set (either in the fridge or at room temp.) give the child a handful of jelly beans or chocolate foil wrapped eggs to put in the centre of their nest.

This is a great afternoon snack or dessert after a healthy lunch.

*If you omit the coconut, replace by adding ¼-1/2 cup of oatmeal.

Incorporating Science and Creative Art:

What you will need:

Styrofoam Cups
Soil
Spoons (enough for all children)
Flower seeds such as Violets
Water in a container with a spout

Any or all of the following:
Markers
Glue
Sparkles, beads, anything else fun and glue able

Allow each child to create their own flower pot.
First, write each child’s name on the bottom of the cup. Then have the children decorate it however they wish to.

Next, have each child fill their cup almost to the top of the cup with soil using a spoon to scoop it.

Then give them a seed to place on the top and have them push the seed down very gently only about a finger tips depth.

Then give them the water to water the seed a tiny bit.

Once everyone has planted their seeds, place their flower pots out where they will get some filtered sunlight.

Optional: Check on the plants daily and see whose started to grow first, last, how much they grow each week, etc. Document the progress on chart paper to post on the wall when the experiment is finished.

Once everyone’s plant have started to grow, send them home with the children and encourage their parents to re-pot the plant and watch it grow more.

Who said the sand box had to be limited to just cars and trucks, shovels and pails.

Let’s get creative!

For a great fresh spring activity, take out those cars and trucks, shovels and pails, and let’s replace the sandbox with gardening gloves, gardening shovels, flower pots, and some fake flowers. While you’re at it, why not add some fun gardening hats for the children to extend their play.

Sit back and watch or join in the fun as you watch them develop their little green thumbs!

The life of a toddler does not need to be day after day of organized activities, but putting in a good routine can help you and your child.

If she knows that on Monday you go to the park, on Wednesday you go to playgroup and on Saturday you have a special Breakfast, it will give her stability and confidence, knowing what is going to happen day to day, but allowing flexibility too.

Between 12 and 24 months your toddler will have more interest in Everything around her, she will enjoy putting things together, poking, prodding and games involving hand to eye coordination.

Her manipulation and fine motor skills will develop as she learns to use her wrist and different grasps depending on the object she is using, she will show her first signs of becoming an artist, using crayons and a paintbrush.

This creative early learning will help your child develop fine motor skills as well as gain confidence, self-expression and a creative mind.

For your toddlers first go at creating a masterpiece, until she develops his fine motor skills, she will need to use stubby crayons and a large sheet of paper. At first there wont be much control where the crayons go on the paper, but as with all other skills, practice and more practice, with lots of encouragement, will help her gain confidence and master this skill.

Children naturally love to make things, and like nothing more than showing you their handiwork. For a young child, crafts and other artistic activities are great for confidence building and self-expression, and having your child's masterpieces around the house will show her how proud you are of her work and give her confidence.

Using Play Dough is another fun learning game, its lovely to squish and squeeze and fun to model, your child can use it from about two years old, but make sure it doesn't get eaten!

Play Dough is very quick and easy to make, it is a brilliant way for children to learn about weights, measurements and the way materials change.

Music and singing nursery rhymes will also play a large part of her daily routine.

Educational music games, toys, instruments and CDs are a great way for Toddlers and Preschoolers to gain from listening to music. Music benefits your child's speech and movement, as well as their self-confidence, self-expression and their listening and concentration skills.

Action Songs help your toddler experience music physically through play, and is great way of interacting between you and your toddler. Your child won't know that she is actually doing educational music games, its just fun to her.

Children love joining in and doing activities with you. An action song can even change their mood, and yours too, making you both happier and content. My personal favourite for changing my mood is, "Johnny Taps With One Hammer", it just makes me laugh.

Some other suggestions could be Head, Shoulders, Knees And Toes, The Wheels On The Bus, If You're Happy And You Know It, I'm A Little Teapot and One Finger, One Thumb, of course the list could go on and on.

You can go to the library and get a range of different music, so you can find out what music makes your toddler tick, and then make up your own educational music game, to get your child involved more in music.

Every child should have a few basic instruments, so that can experiment with music as they wish.

A child's concentration span can be very short, if they are enjoying a piece of music they may well express this the only way they know how, at this age through movement, or dance and the first time your child "feels the beat" can be really entertaining..

The benefits of regular dance sessions are endless. Children are being creative, developing gross and fine motor skills, can work together with other children, build relationships and gain self esteem, to name a few. As with singing songs, dancing to musical tapes will help with their language learning, and get your child used to the rhythm and tune.

Imagination and creative play is an important part of your child's development also.

Children directly copy what adults do, but they also pretend to be adults when they begin to play imaginatively. So show them a good example.

The Home Area is an important area for this, and you need to broaden the gender roles, so that they do not begin to see what men and woman do in narrow ways.

Role Play, encourages children to listen and talk to each other, it extend the powers of self-expression and encourages the expression of imaginative, non - stereotypical ideas and roles.

Physical Growth In Children:

Genetic factors are important to physical growth. Tall parents tend to have tall children and short parents tend to have short children. However an interesting phenomenon called "regression toward the mean" has been observed.

Tall parents have children who are taller than average but shorter than their parents. Short parents have children who are shorter than average but are taller than their parents. Children grow upwards, but not steadily. For long periods children may not grow at all.

At other times they may exhibit rapid growth spurts. Your doctor will record the growth for your child on a growth chart. After recording a series of heights and weights at different ages, you can visualize the growth of your child.

If growth is extremely fast or stops for a long period, it will show up on the graph much more clearly, than through the traditional marks on the wall. At some time during growth and development, most children will be high or low on something.

Height has always seemed a trivial characteristic by which to judge any person. Unfortunately, our culture has traditionally placed values on various heights. Being tall has been as an asset for boys but a problem for girls.

Some parents are concerned that their children will be handicapped for being too tall or too short, and seek out ways to change growth patterns. Many tall women might remember being teased because of their height when they were younger.

Initially, growth is controlled by the growth and the thyroid hormone. During puberty, additional hormones kick in. as adolescents reach puberty, the pituitary gland increase the secretion of a hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

For boys no single dramatic event makes clear that puberty is on its way. There is a typical sequence of changes however that might not be immediately obvious, because they tend to occur over a fairly long period, and begin between 9 and 14.

Preschool Science Experiment: How Strong Is It?

You Will Need Any 5 or All Of:

• parchment paper
• wax paper
• tin foil
• regular paper
• bristol board
• plastic bag
• construction paper
• tissue paper
• bubble wrap
• chart paper
• marker

Science Project Directions:

Depending on the size of your preschool class and how much time you have in the day, bring in 5 of the above materials or all of them.

On a piece of chart paper, write down the list of items you brought in. Now ask the class which materials they think will be the easiest and hardest to rip and make notes beside each item written down.

Now on another piece of chart paper, do the same thing in the same order except this time, have a child come up and rip one of the pieces of materials and document their answer as to whether it was easy or hard for them to rip. Have a different child come up for each material.

Lastly, compare the charts and post them in the room for the children to go back to later and discuss amongst themselves.

Preschool Activity for Kids - Guess Who’s Shadow It Is?

Get a white sheet and place it on an open area on the wall.

Have one of the preschool players sit on a chair facing the sheet on the wall.

At the opposite side of the room have a lamp sitting on a table or something level with the room.

You can now have the preschool kids (players) walk between the ‘guessing player’ (facing the sheet),and the lamp on the table to cast their shadows on the wall, one at a time!

The ‘guessing player’ must try to identify each other child’s shadow one at a time as they walk by.

The students casting shadows can try to alter there shadows to make it more difficult and fun!

The players who have their shadows correctly identified, now becomes the ‘guessing player’

**You then repeat the game play. You can also play music softly in the background for more fun!

As soon as the music is stopped by the ‘music person’, they must sit on the floor as quickly as possible!

Preschool Activity - Pass the Parcel

Sit the preschoolers in a circle.

Play some fun lively music.

Pass the parcel in one direction around the circle. When the music stops, the child with the parcel gets to remove one layer of paper.

Continue on until the music stops again…and allow the next student to remove one layer etc.

Be sure you have enough layers so everyone gets to remove a layer of paper. When totally unwrapped you can give it to the last child as a gift or have the child identify the item.

Causes of Bed Wetting: Eat, Drink, and Wet the Bed

Well, we're on a roll with causes of bed wetting theories. Here's one that seems to make sense. I'm still pretty much sold on the idea that it's a hereditary issue - but it seems like if there are other causes of bed wetting, they may be more controllable. If it's just heredity, you kind of have to wait it out until your child reaches the pre-set magical age of dryness. By nature not especially patient, the idea of waiting it out doesn't appeal to me.

So, here's what I've learned about the food and drink leading to bedwetting theory.

Chocolate

Oh no! Say it isn't so! Well, actually it's not necessarily the chocolate; it's the caffeine in chocolate that may cause bed wetting. What does caffeine do? It stimulates the body, including the bladder. So that evening cup of cocoa or slice of chocolate cake may be a problem. (Gosh, now I'm craving chocolate!)

Soda

Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles. Carbonation is rumored to do strange things to immature bladders. Actually, for any adults who drink soda, you know first-hand that a can of Coke is a ticket to the restroom. It's an effect that's compounded by caffeine - and the sugar's probably not helping matters either.

Oranges and Grapefruits

OK, if you've actually got a child who will eat grapefruit, I'd like to hear about it! But oranges are another story. I get a strange reaction when I eat oranges (and raw cranberries for some reason) - my face gets hot and I feel kind of funky. So, I'm assuming it's possible to be allergic to citrus. The citric acid is the most likely culprit. Try cutting back on the orange juice and citrus in your child's diet to see what happens.

Spicy Stuff

There are some spices out there that could probably be rated pharmaceutical grade. Think of the effect Chinese mustard has on your nose! No doubt some of these spices have an equivalent effect on the bladder. Salsa, Asian food, and other hot, hot, hot foods may be contributing to the bedwetting problem.

Food Allergies

I've heard of people whose children are allergic to everything from eggs to wheat, and have to say that dealing with bedwetting is nothing compared to the trouble they have to go through just to feed their children. Couple a serious food allergy with bedwetting, and it's enough to make you want to retreat to the bath tub for the next ten years! Some allergies cause bladder spasms - which of course, means a bedwetting accident. It's not just food, either. Some people are really sensitive to preservatives, dyes, and other additives. It doesn't seem that the only effect of a food allergy would be bedwetting, though. So don't throw out all your groceries just yet. But if your child has multiple challenges, it's something to consider. You may have to shop around for an allergist - so be prepared.

So what do you do if you discover your child's bedwetting problem is caused by a food sensitivity? It's not like being allergic to a cat - get some shots or send Fluffy to live with Grandma. You'll have to enroll your child's compliance on this (so what else is new?). Get your child to see the value, the what's-in-it-for-me of staying away from what may be a favorite food. Dry nights are pretty valuable - and your child may come to see the tradeoff as worthwhile. The sensitivity may be temporary, too - and that should help.

After all, just the thought of never being able to eat chocolate is cruel and unusual punishment.

Adding protein to this all-time favorite sandwich makes it tastier, and keeps those tummies full for longer periods of time.

What you will need:

Real Cheddar cheese or slices if the children prefer that
Butter
Whole Wheat Bread
Sliced Chicken or Turkey Breast or Ham

Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place butter side down on a napkin. Slice very thin slices of cheddar cheese (or use cheese slices…one slice of cheese for each slice of bread) until you have enough pieces to cover each side of bread. Put the chicken or turkey breast or ham over the cheese on one slice of the bread. Then add the remaining cheese on top of the meat. So now the meat is in between both slices of bread.

Put the other slice of bread on top. Pick up the sandwich and discard the paper towel.

Place in a med. heat frying pan and cook until both sides are browned and the cheese is all melted.

I usually serve this sandwich with a side of veggies and ranch dip, or a fruit salad.

Drinks: Milk, Juice, or Water

Have you ever tried to change things up a bit for different subjects you are doing in the classroom, in your home child care, or at the day care center you work at?

It’s easy to find the donkey game already made for us, I know. But with the help of the preschool class and some drawing paper and markers, you can create some wonderful games that will give you hours of fun.

*Also remember that these games don’t have to be made overnight. Don’t stress yourself out. Turn it into a class project or just a project for yourself and take as long as you need. You will have as much fun making it as you will have playing with it.

To make it fun, you can make the chocolate chips from different colors of construction paper and have a rainbow chip cookie. The children will love it!

Ideas for Making the Games: These games are best made from Bristol board material or even a large piece of cardboard. If you are not a great artist (as I am not…ha-ha) I have had to search for ways to draw these up. I have asked a friend who I know can draw to help me. Other times I have taken an overhead projector and taped my Bristol board to the wall and traced it that way. And other times I have found a large enough picture to use and have been able to draw simpler pictures on my own such as flowers, bees, cookies, etc.

Make sure you make enough game pieces for the children. Have everything colored nice and bright and bold, and laminate what you can for a long game life. Using sticky tack instead of tape will be easier for the children to handle the pieces and it won’t ruin or pull at the game.

Have fun and change these games around as you need or like.

Make sure you make enough game pieces for the children. Have everything colored nice and bright and bold, and laminate what you can for a long game life. Using sticky tack instead of tape will be easier for the children to handle the pieces and it won’t ruin or pull at the game.
